The value of massage therapy is best illustrated by an example. Sometimes, someone with shoulder impingement may have tight pectorals (pecs) and tight latissimus dorsi (lats), which restrict the arm as it goes overhead. This then means muscles have to work harder to lift the arm up overhead, jamming the shoulder and causing pain. Release through the muscles and connective tissue makes this easier and therefore reduces pain.


From an evidence base practice point of view, research shows massage therapy is effective in the treatment of low back pain as well as a range of musculoskeletal issues. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) can also be reduced by massage as well as it working to improve recovery of the muscles post-exercise.
