In the 4th instalment of our Exercise Unpacked Series, we're looking into the staple Step Up.

The good old step up is something that seems quite easy but if done right can be very challenging—perfect for people returning from knee or hip injuries and especially good for runners who are always getting niggles!

The key is to keep the tempo SLOW. Perform 3 sets of 10-15 and work both legs!

Here's how to perform them correctly:

1) Stand in front of step with hands on hip, foot ready on step

2) Push heel down into step and squeeze quad and glute muscles whilst straightening knee. Aim to push body straight into the air instead of leaning forward as we would with a normal step.

3) Slowly lower back down to the ground, bending at the hip and knee

PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Why did you become a physio?

I grew up playing a lot of sport but knew that I wouldn’t be able to play at a high level forever so I became interested in jobs in the sporting field. Physio always appealed to me because I loved learning about the human body and enjoyed helping people so it was a perfect fit.

What are your key special skills and interests as a physio?

Because I’m a brand new physio I'm still working on areas of specialisation, but my main interests currently lie in injury prevention and I would like to further develop my skills and knowledge in this area.

What is your favourite thing about your role at STC?

The variety of patients that walk through our doors that we treat to help get back to everyday life and sports. And the amazing facilities we have right here on site.

What has been the highlight of your career to date?

Completing my degree for physiotherapy and getting a job as a Physio in the area I am interested in!

If you could spend the day as either #SportsTecGus or #SportsTecNibbles, which would you choose and why?

Sorry Nibbles but Gus for sure! As you can tell from my SportsTec profile I love dogs.

Who is the most annoying colleague to share the kitchen with?

Definitely Oli! You never quite know what he’s stashed away in the kitchen or whether or not he wants that half eaten banana from yesterday to be saved or thrown out!

what's Something new you’ve learnt since working at STc?

James has a worrying obsession with the T.V show the Bachelor!

APA SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Why did you become a physio?

I have always had an interest in sport and science. Having dealt with multiple injuries during my time, it was a logical decision to pursue a career in physiotherapy. During my childhood, I had a passion for any sports with a ball, particularly soccer, rugby union and basketball.

What are your key special skills and interests as a physio?

I love to dry needle! But jokes aside, I have a particular interest in the injury management of hip, knee and ankles injuries. I have also been enjoying utilizing the pilates equipment since joining SportsTec which has helped broaden my exercise rehabilitation repertoire.

What is your favourite thing about your role at STC?

The variety of injuries that I am presented with on a weekly basis. Every week delivers something new, and every patient requires a different approach. I enjoy tailoring my rehabilitation to their needs for their individual sport and specific weaknesses.

What has been the highlight of your career to date?

Being able to be a part of multiple sporting teams both locally and nationally in different areas and work alongside some excellent physiotherapists who I have continued to learn from.

If you could spend the day as either #SportsTecGus or #SportsTecNibbles, which would you choose and why?

It would have to be #SportTecGus - because he has a very good physique!
